  7. I Have Decided to...

I Have Decided to Follow Jesus

On Friday nights we are entering into our study of the Ten Commandments as described in Exodus chapter twenty.

The chapter begins with these words: Then God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery." (Exodus 20:1-2 NASB)

I have been thinking about these words as I prepare this study. This passage is specific to the Children of Israel. Afterall, He led them out of Egypt; He didn’t lead me out of Egypt. Or did He?

When we see references to Egypt throughout Scripture, Egypt represents the world. Prior to receiving the saving grace of Jesus, we were all part of the world. We were in slavery. We were in bondage to the world, tied to it in sin, regret and without hope.

One day, God spoke to us saying, “I am the Lord your God, who brings you out of the world through the death and resurrection of My Son. His death and resurrection has given you new life, an eternal life. Yes, even a life of freedom from the bondage of the world (Egypt).

As we begin our Spiritual walk, it is pf the utmost importance that we remember that following:

God spoke.

He is the Lord, God.

He is the one who leads.

When and how did He speak to you?

The writer of Hebrews tells us that God “has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds;” [Heb 1:2 NKJV]

Jesus is the Lord, God. In John 14,  Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. "If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; and from now on you know Him and have seen Him."

Philip said to Him, "Lord, show us the Father, and it is sufficient for us."

Jesus said to him, "Have I been with you so long, and yet you have not known Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; so how can you say, 'Show us the Father'?”

Jesus is the one who leads. He has called you out of Egypt. It is imperative we follow Jesus. And He was saying to [them] all, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Luke 9:23 NASB

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;” John 10:27 NASB

He will lead you, but it is up to you to make the decision to follow Him. The words of the old hymn ring true:

I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
I have decided to follow Jesus;
No turning back, no turning back.

He is calling each one of us today. Listen to us His voice. Recognize Who He is and follow Him.

Have you decided?
